Cycle rally brings in the cash
Survey results have shown that the Mildenhall area received almost £245,000 as a direct result of the town’s latest cycling rally.
Following a face-to-face survey carried out by Mildenhall Cycling Club, organisers of the event, and Forest Heath District Council, it was revealed that £244,550 was spent in the town by those attending the three-day rally in August.
The total was reached by survey officials after multiplying together the average spend per person of £48.91, with a conservative estimate of 5,000 people for the total number visiting the annual attraction.
“Although we recognised that the rally could only be of benefit to Mildenhall and the surrounding areas, we did not realise the true extent of the economic impact that the rally was having on the local community,” said Mark Burchett, chairman of Mildenhall Cycling Club.
“We are extremely delighted though, that the whole community including local businesses are benefiting from the rally, many of whom already do work with us to increase the mutual benefits”
Equally delighted with the findings of the survey was James Waters, leader of Forest Heath District Council.
“These events are a very welcome boost to the local economy not only through the income they generate at the time but also because people may choose to make return visits at other times of the year,” said Mr Waters.
“The event attracts visitors from across the country who in turn spread the word about what a great place Mildenhall is.”
Over the years the event has been the launch pad for a number track cycling stars including reigning Olympic champions Victoria Pendleton and Laura Trott, who competed at the rally as recently as 2010.
This year’s rally, which will again feature several national races, will take place at Mildenhall College’s Sheldrick Way site between August 24 and 26.
