Cult status of Super 8

Artists have been creating iconic work using Super 8mm film which, in its day, was the most widely used medium for home movies.

Now an exhibition being brought to Smiths Row in Bury St Edmunds gives a glimpse of the appeal and cult status of the Super 8.

Flicker: Artists and Super 8 runs from January 19 until March 23 and has been mounted by the gallery in collaboration with Cambridge Super 8 Group.

The Super 8 mm film format was introduced by Kodak in 1965 and led the field in home movie technology until the arrival of video technology.

It has now re-emerged and provides a nostalgic and artistic medium championed by Derek Jarman, Giovanna Maria Casetta and Adam Kossoff.

The exhibition explores how the analogue movie image is still a rich source of inspiration and cultural heritage even in today’s hi-tech world.
