Couple’s cash boost for new baby unit

A football shirt, signed by Manchester United legend Roy Keane and donated by a Newmarket sports shop, helped a fundraising auction and race night, arranged by grateful parents to thank the hospital which cared for their premature son, raise £4,400.

Dave and Sarah Gooderham arranged the event in aid of West Suffolk Hospital, which cared for their son George, who weighed just 4lb 4oz when he was born six weeks early last February and spent two and a half weeks in the hospital’s special care unit.

Dave Gooderham launched a dedicated blog - georgegooderhamracenight.blogspot.co.uk and having already attracted a host of signed sporting goods, including an England shirt signed by the squad prior to their recent friendly against Brazil, and also a week’s holiday in Normandy, he was contacted by Newmarket Sports with the offer of another item – an Ipswich Town shirt signed by former boss Keane, who signed the shirt after Ipswich played at Newmarket Town in a pre-season friendly in 2010.

The money which Dave and Sarah raised will be put towards a new £60,000 bereavement room at the hospital where families will be able to receive psychological and practical support following the loss of a baby.
