Council to cap broadband aid
A cap on how much councillors can claim towards their broadband rental costs was set to be imposed last night following new recommendations on their allowance payments.
Until now Forest Heath District Council put no limit on how much each of its 27 members could claim towards their broadband costs and published figures for councillors’ expenses for 2011/12 showed a total of £5,109 was claimed.
Last night the council was being asked to approve a new councillors’ allowances scheme recommended by the independent remuneration panel which suggested “the contribution towards the cost incurred in providing a broadband connection be £240 per year, or £20 a month for each of the authority’s councillors.
Among those who objected to the move when it was first suggested in May last year was former council chairman Cllr Roger Dicker, who claimed £624.77 for broadband expenses in 2011/12, the highest amount, and up from the £611.47 he received in 2010/11.
The panel recommended no changes to councillors’ basic or special responsibility allowances.
