Council pledges to fund under-threat layby

SOHAM Town Council has pledged its support in opposing the closure of a popular layby.

Along with East Cambridgeshire Council, the authority will be donating money in a bid to keep the "crooked drain" layby near Barway open to lorry drivers and motorists.

The move was agreed at Monday's town council meeting after members heard about Cambridgeshire County Council's plans for the site.

Unless 60,000 can be raised to fund vital repairs, the county council had said it would close the layby.

"I think we should press the county council to look at it again," said chairman Chris Palmer.

"It is the only layby on the A142 between here and March.

"I think we have to try to do everything we can. If the council closes it down, there will be nowhere for lorry drivers to stop."

Councillor Rosemary Aitchison suggested writing to local haulage companies, including businesses such as Turners and Shropshires, in a bid to gain even more support.

Soham county councillor John Powley said he was lobbying hard to keep the site open.

"We recognise the value of it," he said.

"It does provide a very valuable amenity for drivers to pull off the road."
