Clubs’ day to stay in September

MOVES to move the date of the popular Clubs’ and Organisations’ day in Mildenhall have been rejected by parish councillors.

Suggestions were made at last month’s Mildenhall Parish Council meeting about the possibility of moving the event from September to July.

The suggested date change would see the event run alongside Forest Heath Council’s Lark in the Park.

But the suggestion brought an angry reaction from councillors.

“We make a really good go of Clubs and Organisations day. To get a footfall of around 2,000 is pretty good as we are only a small parish council,” said Cllr John Barker.

“We have a very good rapport with the organisations within the town and last year’s event was deemed successful by many with many clubs seeing their membership increase as a result of the event.

“I for one would be loath to see it lost in the melee which is Lark in the Park,” said Cllr Barker.

Speaking in support of Cllr Barker, were councillors Brian Sulman and Mike Ball.

“Why change something that has been so successful. I think we should stick to running our event in September,” said Cllr Sulman.

“If Forest Heath want to run Lark in the Park with us it can join us on our September date,” said Cllr Ball.

Although most councillors were in favour of keeping the event in September, Cllr David Bowman spoke in favour of the alternative proposal.

“I think it would be far easier if we had both events on the same. Personally, I think that we should defer making a decision so that more talks can take place with Forest Heath about bringing both events together,” said Cllr Bowman.

Following a lengthy discussion councillors voted in favour of Clubs and Organisations Day keeping its September date.
