Chance to join in at Ely Cathedral

A SOHAM school has launched a project giving residents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to sing in their prestigious carol concert at the iconic Ely Cathedral.

Inspired by reality TV show The Choir, the scheme by Soham Village

College will allow local budding singers to join its talented choir for one month, where they will undergo four weekly rehearsals before performing in front of more than 1,000 people at thehistoric cathedral.

The Sand Street school has been performing its annual carol concert at the cathedral for 10 years and it is one of the best-known across the

county.

Assistant principal Stephen Kenna, who will be directing the group, said he was looking forward to the challenge of creating a choir and getting them ready to perform before hundreds of people.

"Luckily, the idea has got round and I think there is going to be quite a good response.

"The college carol concert is recognised as one of the best in the

county and includes an 80-piece orchestra, the cathedral organ, talented

soloists and over 300 voices."

The idea, based on the hit BBC programme where conductor Gareth Malone travels to schools and communities to form a choir with the aim of performing at a professional venue, was raised jointly by staff and parents at a meeting following the college's 50th anniversary celebrations last year.

The first rehearsal on Monday is an open invitation to people of all abilities in Soham who would like to take part in the project.

It starts at 7.30pm in the college's drama studio at its Beechurst site.

Mr Kenna said: "I am really hoping some people who have been involved in school productions before will come along and those who have not tried anything like this will have a go."

The carol concert is on Thursday, December 17, and tickets are available from the college.
