A spokesman for property developer Bill Gredley has been telling an inspector that a council’s planning policy aimed at protecting the town’s racing heritage, was “negative and restrictive.”

Stephen Walsh, speaking at a public examination of the racing policy, said it was “putting restrictions on a colossal amount of development in Newmarket.”

Mr Gredley has been trying for more than 25 years to develop the Queensbury Lodge stables site but his plans have been refused 14 times with council decisions backed by planning inspectors.
