Centre plan for ex-school

A former Newmarket middle school is to be turned into a community centre for the town.

Following a consultation undertaken by the county council in June on the future on both the town’s redundant middle school sites, which revealed support for sporting and community use, it has confirmed its desire to work with residents and sporting organisations to create a community hub at the Scaltback Middle School site.

This will enable continued use for those sporting organisations that already use the site, including Newmarket Rugby Club, Newmarket Badminton Club and Newmarket Joggers, and provide new opportunities for organisations seeking premises within the town.

The Newmarket Sports Development Association (NSDA), which manages the pavilion at Scaltback, and is temporarily managing the school gymnasium, has said it is keen to work with Suffolk County Council to develop the use of the site for sporting and community use.

Newmarket county councillor Lisa Chambers, Suffolk County Council’s cabinet member for property management said: “During the consultation we had a lot of interest in the future use of the Scaltback middle school site and the local community made it clear that they would like to see the site made available for sporting and community use.

“We will work with those organisations who are already using the facilities at the Scaltback site to develop a way forward. We would also like to hear from others sports clubs and community organisations who may be interested in using the site.”

A plan to turn the school in Elizabeth Way, which along with St Felix Middle School, closed last July, into a new primary school has been dropped.

Any local groups or organisations interested in using or taking space on the Scaltback site can contact Sara Blake at Suffolk County Council: sara.blake@suffolk.gov.uk or tel 01473 260761.
