Carnival in appeal for help

Organisers of Soham’s annual carnival want the public’s help as they bid to put on the biggest and best show yet to mark its 60th anniversary.

The Soham Benevolent Association is in the process of preparing for the 2013 spectacle, which will be held on the town’s recreation ground on Bank Holiday Monday, May 27.

And to help celebrate the show’s 60th year, organisers want memorabilia from past events to display on a large screen during the event.

Soham Benevolent Association secretary Kate Bavester said: “Whilst we have a good photographic record of more recent events, we would like to feature any photographs and press cuttings of carnivals of yesteryear.

“We need the help of the readers to do this – if they have any photgraphs we could display, if they can scan these into a computer and email them to carnival@soham.org.uk we would be really grateful. If readers do not have access to a computer they can take their photos and news items into KNA Creative at 9a Churchgate Street, Soham, who will be happy to scan the items ready for us to use.”

The association is also appealing for any carnival princesses from 1953-2012 to get in touch as they would like to include a parade float of princesses covering as many years as possible.

“As it’s the 60th anniversary event, we would like to make the parade the biggest we have had in recent times,” Kate added.

Already confirmed for this year’s event is the traditional heavy horse show, which runs from 9am to 1pm. Team Extreme is also returning to the event with their BMX, scooter and skateboard show.

The Funky Fidos, Sammy Magic Magic, live music featuring Rock Q –a Queen tribute band – along with numerous stalls, a beer tent and barbecue, have also been confirmed.

Anyone interested in having a float or taking part in the parade should email carnival@soham.org.uk or call Kim Botting on 01353 624493.

Stalls are available for the day at £15, booking forms for which can be found online at www.carnival.soham.org
