Car removed after eight-week wait
A DISTRICT council has finally removed an abandoned car from a street in Newmarket nearly eight weeks after it first appeared.
Earlier this week, officials from Forest Heath District Council towed away the green Fiat Punto, from Lisburn Road.
The car, whose registered owner lives in Bury St Edmunds, had been on the street since the middle of December.
“I know it is not a major issue, but it demonstrates a lack of response and action within the local services,” said Phil Priestley, resident.
“With all the parking for residents being on-street and already being at a premium the abandoned car was taking up a valuable parking space.
“In this kind of weather people want to be parked close to their homes.”
“It is such a nice street down here and that car was a real eye-sore. All the neighbours get on well. We were all scratching our heads about what to do about this car. It just made the street look bad,” said Mr Priestley.
Asked why it had taken so long to remove the vehicle a spokeswoman for Forest Heath said: “There is a formal process we have to follow to properly establish if the car is abandoned. This process can take a little time.
“We apologise to residents for the short delay but we can now confirm that the car in question has been removed.”
