A Burwell couple will have plenty to smile about at the weekend when they celebrate an impressive milestone –their diamond wedding.

Bob and Jean Worledge, of Bolton Close, will celebrate their 60th anniversary with a family Sunday lunch at the White Horse pub in Exning.

It was a rocky start for the lovebirds, who met aged 16 in Downham Market where Jean, 84, was born.

Describing their first meeting, Jean said: “I came out of church with my mum, dad and twin sister Joy.

“We were walking down a little alleyway to a big playing field and there were some boys sitting on a wall, including Bob, who said some comments to us, so I pushed him off the wall.”

Luckily, the pair met again at Bob’s 18th birthday party and have been together ever since.

They married in Downham Market on February 7, 1953.

The couple moved to Suffolk about 40 years ago, living in Moulton and Snailwell before settling in Burwell where they have lived for the last 14 years.

Bob, 85, from Southery, worked as a tractor driver at Moulton Manor Farm among other places, while Jean worked in a shop in Downham Market before giving up work to look after their children.

They have a son, Mark, from Bury St Edmunds, a daughter, Annette, from Soham, and three grandchildren, Daniel, 29, Darren, 28, and 12-year-old Gemma.

The couple enjoy completing jigsaw puzzles together and Bob is a keen gardener.

Jean said the secret to a long and happy marriage was “give and take” and “never to go to bed on an argument”, while Bob said their longevity was down to being “very happy together”.
