Bumper crowds enjoy the whoosh, bang and crackle

Newmarket Lions' annual fireworks display, held at Exning Cricket Club on Saturday, attracted bumper crowds.

Chris Rawlinson, one of the organisers, said: "It was a very successful night. Our costs have increased through the extra insurance we have to pay, but we have still raised money to spend on other events we organise, including our Christmas party for Newmarket pensioners."

It was the only large-scale public display in the Newmarket area after Newmarket Round Table cancelled its event, which in past years has attracted crowds of up to 3,000, because of a shortage of volunteers.
