BREAKING NEWS: Power cuts affect thousands of Newmarket residents
THOUSANDS of Newmarket residents were left without electricity today after a power black out.
A spokeswoman from EDF Energy, which provides power to homes across the area, confirmed that shops and homes, lost their supply for about 30 minutes.
"EDF Energy Networks engineers have restored power to several thousand customers in central Newmarket, whose supplies were affected by a fault on the high voltage electricity network at 2.08pm today," she said.
"The majority of customers affected, had their power restored by 2.15pm and the remaining supplies were restored in stages between 2.29pm and 2.54pm.
"We would like to apologise for the inconvenience caused."
A complete blackout in the Guineas shopping centre caused many shops to close temporarily.
One Newmarket resident told the Journal: "I saw a few people leaving some of the shops, which looked to be closing and shutting their security blinds.
"There were no lights on at all.
"It looked as if some sort of power cut had affected the whole shopping centre."
