A ‘white collar’ boxing night is being organised in memory of a Newmarket woman who died on Saturday after a long battle with cancer.
Mum and grandmother, Marion ‘Maz’ McFarlane, of Bentinck Close, was just 56 and was still raising money for cancer charities just a few weeks before her death.
She organised a Macmillan coffee morning at the town’s memorial hall which raised more than £1300 and told the Journal she hoped her family would continue to hold the event in her memory.
In last week’s Journal she told readers how important the support she had received from St Nicholas Hospice Care had been to her and her family.“I am not frightened of dying, I have come to terms with it,” said Marion, “but it’s what you leave behind that breaks your heart.”
Boxing promoter Pat McAleese, from Newmarket’s Perfect U fitness studio, is organising Newmarket White Collar Fight Night at Tattersalls on Saturday, November 9, in Maz’s memory and to celebrate her fighting spirit.
“She was such a wonderfully upbeat and inspirational lady,” said Pat. “She was a true fighter who had such a determined spirit. She will be deeply missed.”
For tickets, which cost £25, contact Pat on 07852 980593. Ten per cent of the proceeds will go to the hospice as well as proceeds from the raffle and bucket collection.
