A bomb disposal unit was called to RAF Mildenhall after a suspicious package was found in a vehicle attempting to enter the base.

The main gate (Gate 15) has now reopened after 100th Security Forces Squadron (SFS) personnel closed it at 8.24am yesterday, redirecting traffic to the West Row Gate (Gate 11).

The 100th SFS worked with the Ministry of Defence and British Explosive Ordnance Disposal to clear the scene, which reopened about two-and-a-half hours later.

A spokesman for RAF Mildenhall said the vehicle was going through a routine search while attempting to enter the base when the package was found.

Col. Kevin Parker, 100th Civil Engineer Squadron commander, said: “The gate was closed at approximately 8.24am after 100th Security Forces Squadron personnel found a suspicious package during a routine vehicle inspection.

“The 100th SFS, Ministry of Defence and British Explosive Ordnance Disposal personnel worked together to clear the scene, and they have certified it is now safe.”
