African adventures are on the horizon for a Mildenhall beauty queen who has won a place in the UK heat of a global modelling competition.
Kirsty Bentley, who was crowned Miss Cambridgeshire at last year’s Miss England competition, will set off on Monday for a week-long trip to Tanzania to take part in Miss Scuba UK.
The 22 year old was spotted by model scouts and went for an interview in London before being chosen as one of ten women to represent the UK.
“I thought it would be a good opportunity, but I wasn’t expecting to get it,” said Kirsty, from Oxford Close.
In Tanzania, Kirsty will take part in several specialised rounds including the grand final on September 23, where a winner will be picked to go to the world finals in Bali later this year.
She will have the chance to go on a safari, do plenty of sightseeing and will spend three days taking a scuba diving course - Miss Scuba UK aims to promote diving education and marine conservation around the world.
Kirsty said: “I will also be visiting a local school and taking a shoe box full of little presents like crayons and balloons, which seems little to you and I but to them means so much.
“I am immensely grateful for this amazing opportunity. I’m quite nervous about the scuba diving, but it’s something I would never do otherwise so I think I’m going to have to face my fears.”
As Miss Cambridgeshire, Kirsty has raised £2,900 for Beauty With a Purpose, with some of the money going towards building a caravan for terminally ill children in Torquay.
She will return to the University of Surrey in October to complete the final year of her dance and culture degree.
