A close shave proves fun on Red Nose Day

Fundraisers across the region followed the example of popstar Jessie J by shaving their heads for Comic Relief.

Also stepping up for a close shave was Joy Fuller, of Sainsbury’s in Mildenhall, who helped the store raise £2,000, and teacher Paul East, who raised £350 by shaving off half his beard, bringing All Saints Primary School’s fundraising effort to more than £500.
Money raised locally was added to the highest-ever national total – a staggering £75,107,851.
About 1,000 staff and students from Soham Village College raised £1,300 by breaking the Guiness world record for the number of people doing the “superman dance”. A spokeswoman for the college said that while the record had not yet been made official, they had smashed the previous record of 369 people.
Newmarket College teachers raised £1,000 by being gunged by sixth form students, while Mildenhall College staff were soaked with flying sponges and students held a silent disco.
Bake-offs and cake sales were held at St Andrew’s Primary School in Soham, Fordham Primary School, Kettlefields Primary School in Dullingham, Cheveley Primary School, Great Wilbraham Primary School and Bottisham Primary School.
Staff at Manchett’s Budgens in Burwell raised £300 by selling raffle tickets for an Easter hamper. The 1st Newmarket Rainbows raised nearly £200 by dressing in their pyjamas and holding a cake stall.
Ten-year-old Nicole Clarke and Beatrice Gibbs, six, organised a cake sale and activities in Freckenham to raise £141.58.
The Mayor of Newmarket, Cllr George Lambton, donned a red nose as he hosted a civic reception for 100 guests at the town’s Memorial Hall that raised £278.77. Funds will be divided equally between Comic Relief and the Mayor’s nominated charity, Newmarket Open Door.
