St Nicholas Hospice Care has been handed a financial boost thanks to the efforts of a boxing promoter from Newmarket.
Former professional boxer Pat McAleese presented officials at the Bury St Edmunds based hospice with a cheque for £1,044 after raising the cash during his latest white collar boxing show in Newmarket which was held earlier this month.
The 27 year old decided to raise the money, which was made up of proceeds collected from a raffle and a from a percentage of the total profits made at the show, in memory of Newmarket mum and grandmother Marion McFarlane, who died after a long battle with cancer aged 56 in October.
“We didn’t really have a set target which wanted to raise but we are pleased with the figure we ended up raising,” said Mr McAleese.
“It is nice to be able to give something back to charity, especially one so local as the hospice.
“Hopefully the money will help families who end up using the hospice in the future.”
