People living in the Forest Heath area can expect to pay up to £300 each next year when poll tax replaces the old rates system.

The figure was revealed this week as canvass forms for the poll tax, or community charge as it is formally known, were sent out to more than 20,000 people in the Newmarket and Mildenhall areas.

Forest heath Council has sent out guidance notes and leaflets with the forms and has set up a special helpline for those who have trouble filling it in.

Eventually the council will set up a register of every adult over the age of 18 who will then become responsible for paying their own community charge bill.

Implementing the charge will cost £452,000 which includes taking on 12 extra staff and building an extension at the council’s Mildenhall offices to house the new department . It is likley to cost £800,000 a year to impose the charge.
