Newmarket Swimming Pool is to be closed for two weeks because of an infestation of cockroaches.

The pool has been invaded by a plague of the pests following the recent dry weather.

Now Forest Heath Council has decided to shut the pool from Monday to carry out a two-week eradication programme.

“We have been aware of them for a few days but the infestation has become so widespread that we need to close the pool and carry out regular treatment,” said Roland Cross, the council’s chief technical officer.

He said cockroaches thrived in warm, humid conditions and had probably been attracted to the pool because of the dry conditions outside. “We have special materials to deal with the problem and can carry out daily treatment during the two weeks the pool is shut,” he said. “The health of the public is obviously more important than the availability of swimming facilities.”
