A horse named after a soap opera character played by the actor who bred him defied odds of 80-1 when landing a dream win at Newmarket on Friday.

Former Emmerdale star, Frazer Hines, 68, pictured left, was “over the moon” when Joe Sugden got home by a head sparking celebrations by members of Chippenham-based syndicate, the Brookside Breeders’ Club. Part owner Daniel James, whose father John James, right, owns Brookside Stud, said: “Frazer sold the horse as a two-year-old and we invited him to become a part-owner with us. We named the horse Joe Sugden as Frazer had been very poorly with cancer and we wanted to cheer him up.”

The gelding is trained by Ilka Gansera-Leveque in Newmarket.
