Out-of-hours service cut effects to be monitored
HEALTH officials have agreed to monitor the effect of closing Newmarket’s walk-in emergency out-of-hours service after concerns were raised by local campaigners.
As revealed in last week’s Journal, the service, which currently operates from Newmarket Hospital and was set up for those people who need urgent GP attention, will cease from February 1.
It transpired that the only consultation by Harmoni, the service provider, was with local GPs, not with members of the public or Newmarket’s health forum.
Dr David Lee, regional medical director for Harmoni, said it had agreed to a recommendation from the health scrutiny committee on Tuesday that a period of testing would take place.
“We have listened to the concerns of the public and will continue to engage with people and communities far beyond February 1,” he said.
“We will continue to talk to patients, clinicians, local NHS organisations and the local authority during the coming months to monitor the impact of these changes and to ensure the service evolves within a changing healthcare environment.”
