A decision on whether Lord Derby can build 400 homes at Newmarket’s Hatchfield Farm has been delayed until the New Year.

The Secretary of State had been due to make an announcement tomorrow but today a spokesman for Forest Heath District Council said the decision was now expected “mid to late January.”

A previous application for 1,200 homes on the same site was rejected on appeal in 2012 but Forest Heath District Council planners had given their approval to the most recent application for a reduced development. Their decision was ‘called in’ after Newmarket MP Matthew Hancock urged the then Secretary of State Eric Pickles to examine the application as it was a matter of ‘national significance’ to the town’s world famous horseracing and thoroughbred industries.
