Newmarket’s former Doric cinema has been named as an “asset of community value.’
The move, by Forest Heath District Council, follows a community right to bid application from The Doric Centre Project Group headed by residents David Rippington and David Goodman. They now have just over four weeks to say whether they want to put in a bid to buy the site, and then a further six months to formally bid for the site. There is no obligation for the owner, Terry Lake, to sell to the group. A planning application to turn the former cinema and De Niro’s night club into flats and offices has still to be considered and while the listing will be taken into consideration, it is not grounds on which the application can be refused.
