The funeral service for former Newmarket town and district councillor Maureen Hills will be held at Newmarket’s Roman Catholic Church on Monday at 11am. Mrs Hills, who was 75, died in her sleep on Thursday.

She was the first wife of trainer Barry Hills and the matriach of a racing dynasty. which included twins Richard and Michael, both former leading jockeys and eldest son John who tragically pre-deceased his mother three months ago when he lost his life to pancreatic cancer aged just 53.

Newmarket born and bred, she was the daughter of Paddy Newson and lived in the town, and in Kentford, most her life apart from the years she spent in Lambourn with her former husband. “She loved Newmarket and its racing which is why she was on the council for many years and also one of the trustees of the National Horseracing Museum,” said Richard. Family flowers only at the funeral service with donations to the museum and the Newmarket Cancer Research UK Group.
