Born 11 days after British and German troops had left their trenches for the Christmas day truce, Ethel Cox of Churchill Avenue in Newmarket celebrated her 100th birthday on Monday with her two sons Ray and Jeff and her daughter Marjorie.

Born in Manchester, Ethel moved to Newmarket with her late husband Jim in 1952 and worked for curtain making factory Jean Hardwick. She also made racing silks for Royal jockey Harry Carr. She has seven grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
