Members of Newmarket Town Council have voted unanimously to increase its portion of council tax demand.

On Monday Cllr Rachel Hood was one of a handful of councillors voting against the town authority’s increase of £1.45 for a Band D property. “I don’t believe this council should be raising the precept,” she said: “We have huge staff costs of £260,000 a year and it is an embarrassment that we are increasing our precept.”

Last night members of Forest Heath District Council which covers Newmarket and Mildenhall were set to freeze its share of the council tax demand for the seventh consecutive year.Cllr Stephen Edwards, the council’s cabinet member for resources, said: “We continue to reduce costs and consider other ways to fund services wherever possible.”
