New school on way for Soham

A NEW primary school could be opened in Soham by September next year.

Cambridgeshire County Council has revealed it plans to build a school in the north of the town ahead of the start of the 2013 academic year.

It would provide places for current needs and ease the strain on the town’s two existing primary schools resulting from planned development in the area. In a statement on its website, the county council said it hoped to submit a formal planning application next month.

It said the school site was within the ownership of the council’s Farms Estate. It added: “The site has already been designated for education use within the East Cambridgeshire District Council Soham Masterplan, which seeks to enhance and develop the ‘northern gateway’ to the town.

“Vehicular access to the proposed school will be via a new road from the A142 roundabout and pedestrian access will be from The Shade and Kingfisher Drive.”

The council said the school would be built in two phases, each providing a total of 210 places for pupils aged four to 11. Plans include a two-room pre-school for two to four year olds.

The statement continued: “After working on a design for the school for some months with a group of key stakeholders, the council is satisfied that the plans are sufficiently advanced to share with the wider community.

“A planning application will be submitted in March, for both phases of the school building, and the first phase will be completed in time for the academic year starting in September, 2013.”

A public exhibition of the plans will be held at the Walter Gidney Pavilion, on Soham’s recreation ground, between 10am and 8pm on Thursday, February 23.

Council officers and members of the design team will be available to answer questions about the design proposals.

To comment on the proposals, email Ian Trafford, the council’s education officer, at ian.trafford@cambridgeshire.gov.uk or call 01223 699803.
