THE principal of Newmarket College said he was delighted with the improvement in GCSE results published in the latest league tables.

Figures released by the Department for Education last week showed 45 per cent of Year 11 pupils at the Exning Road school achieved five or more A* to C GCSE passes, including maths and English, last summer.

The previous year, only 29 per cent of students gained five or more A* to C passes, which placed the school as the 90th worst performing school in England.

Principal Dr Bob Cadwalladr said the results meant the school had the most improved results in Suffolk for five or more A* to C GCSEs.

He said the school’s improvement was due to better behaviour from pupils, a good curriculum and effective teaching.

He said: “I am very pleased with the progress, particularly the significant improvement in the English exam results, which had gone up by 22 per cent, so that made a big impact on our overall results.

“We are pleased with getting 45 per cent and pleased that we are the most improved school in Suffolk. Last year was a significant blip but in the end we can see the improvement within the school.

“I would like to say a big well done to the students, thank you to parents for supporting the school and give a big pat on the back to staff for all their hard work and seeing the fruition of their hard work in the students’ success.”

Dr Cadwalladr said there was still work to be done at the school, which failed to reach the national average of 58.2 per cent.

“We are very pleased that we are moving in the right direction,” he said. “We are not there yet. There are various groups of students that we feel didn’t do as well as they might have done last year and we are working hard to make sure we don’t have quite as many in that situation this summer.”

About 300 extra pupils and 30 staff will join the school in September as part of Suffolk County Council’s school reorganisation programme.

Elsewhere in Suffolk, pupils at Mildenhall College of Technology achieved a 46 per cent A* to C pass rate.

In Cambridgeshire, Bottisham Village College pupils celebrated a 67 per cent pass rate and Soham Village College pupils gained a pass rate of 62 per cent.
