Derrick Starling

THE funeral of Derrick Bert Starling, of Chapel Street, Exning, took place at West Suffolk Crematorium, Risby, on March 26.

Mr Starling, who was 78, died at West Suffolk Hospital, Bury St Edmunds, on March 12 after a short illness.

Born in Fordham, he took up an engineering apprenticeship with King and Harper in Cambridge, before serving two years' National Service with the Army in Germany.

He then worked as an engineer at Tillotson's at Burwell and Ely for 26 years. His last job before retiring due to ill-health was with Beehive Coils on Studlands Park.

A former Exning School governor and a member of the shadow parish council, he was also involved in the Newmarket Scouting movement.

Gardening, computer work and, in his earlier years, dancing, were among his hobbies and interests.

Mr Starling is survived by his wife, Margaret, and leaves two sons, Mark and Andrew, and two grandchildren, Matthew and Megan.
