Fire crews tackle spate of car blazes
THOUSANDS of pounds of damage has been caused following a spate of car fires across Newmarket.
On Monday, firefighters from the town received call-outs to two car fires within the space of five hours.
Crews were alerted to the first incident at the ATS car park in Bury Road by police shortly after 3am.
Firefighters put out the blaze, which is being treated as suspicious, by 3.30am.
At about 7.30am crews were on the road again to tackle another car fire in Snailwell Road close to its junction with Fordham Road.
The fire is believed to have started in the vehicle’s engine compartment shortly after being switched on by its owner.
The blaze was put out at about 8.15am.
Two days earlier, two crews from the town were alerted to an LPG-powered car catching fire in the Rowley Mile Racecourse car park.
The car, which was completely destroyed, took about two hours to put out. The fire is not being treated as suspicious.
