Chef in court over benefits

A CHEF from Newmarket has been given a 12-month conditional discharge after claiming benefits she was not entitled to.

Twenty-seven-year-old Emma Saville, from George Lambton Avenue, appeared before magistrates in Bury St Edmunds to plead guilty to failing to notify benefits authorities of a change in her circumstances.

Elizabeth White, prosecuting, told the court that Saville claimed £724.04 in housing and council tax benefits between May and November last year, despite working as a chef at the White Hart in Newmarket.

Saville, who received a caution for a similar offence in June, 2010, was caught out following a data matching exercise carried out by Forest Heath District Council.

In addition to the conditional discharge, Saville was ordered to pay £300 towards court costs.
