Newmarket town councillors are to press the district authority over the need for a cinema in the town.

At a meeting of the council’s leisure services committee on Monday, members recognised it was unlikely a major cinema chain would want to open a multi-plex venue but said they believed there was the demand for a ‘picture house’ type venue similar to one in Cambridge and Bury St Edmunds.

Councillor Warwick Hirst asked whether films could be shown in the memorial hall by way of gaging local interest but committee chairman Cllr Mick Jefferys said: “That would not be a good test because people want to see the latest films in a cinema atmosphere.”

Odeon Cinemas had expressed an interest in coming to the town as part of a proposed retail development on the George Lambton playing fields which was turned down by planners.
