The funeral of Edward Cobbold took place at St Martin’s Church, Exning, on October 24. Mr Cobbold, known as Ted, of Melrose Gardens, Newmarket, died at Newmarket Community Hospital on October 15 after a short illness. He was 85.
Born in Exning, he later lived in Newmarket and was educated at the village and town schools respectively.
During the war he served with the Army Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers and toured Italy and Egypt.
Mostly an electronic engineer by trade, he worked for some years at Newmarket Microsystems.
He was also very clever working with his hands and was particularly interested in building musical instruments including violins, violas and cellos, being taught how to make them at a Cambridge teaching school, where he was also keen to oversee the youngsters learning too.
Also a bookworm and classical music lover, he enjoyed travelling in his motorhome, especially to Yorkshire and Scotland.
Mr Cobbold is survived by his wife, Shirley.
The service was taken by the Rev Dr Colin McCarty and David Pugh was the organist.
