Familiar faces from Manchester City teams of the past graced the pitch at Newmarket Town FC on Friday for one-off charity match.

Players including Peter Barnes, Darren Huckerby, Ian Brightwell and Dave Bennett, took on the Newmarket Town Veterans’ team in a game to raise cash for St Nicholas Hospice Care.

Before the match former England international Barnes presented a bouquet of flowers on behalf of the City stars in memory of former town stable girl Jayne Reid.

The 27 year old spent the final weeks of her life at the Bury St Edmunds hospice during a year long battle with a rare form of ovarian cancer.

On the pitch the City stars showed that despite their advancing years that they still retained that touch of class as they raced into a 3-0 lead before Town pulled a goal back. The visitors fired home a further five goals and while Town did pull another goal back it was too little too late. Star of the show for the visitors was Huckerby who was on target four times. “This was my first time playing for City but as I live in Norwich it was like a home game for me,” said Huckerby. “I like to try and help where I can and the match was a for a good cause. Everyone seemed to enjoy it.”
