Horse power was replaced by pedal power at Newmarket’s Rowley Mile race track on Sunday as more than 300 cyclists geared up for the second annual Newmarket Hilly charity cyclo-sportive.
Riders of all abilities took to the home of the QIPCO 1000 and 2000 Guineas for the start of the event before going on to tackle either a 25- mile, 50-mile or a 100-mile cycle route set out in the surrounding countryside.
Organising the event once again was the Newmarket Festival Committee, a group which raises money for local causes in Newmarket.
“We had about 350 people turn up for the event this year, which is up on last year so we are going in the right direction,” said Mark Edmondson, Newmarket Festival Committee chairman.
“A big thank you has to go our sponsors Revel Outdoors, The Spa at the Bedford Lodge Hotel, and Lloyds Bank, as without them nothing is possible, and to those volunteers from the Newmarket Cycling and Triathlon Club and Newmarket College.
“Although it is too early to say how much we raised from the event, we expect it to have raised several thousand for the Festival coffers.”
