A delighted charity walk organiser is celebrating after raising thousands of pounds in just one day.

Jessica Gaskin, 20, from Red Lodge, was amazed when she discovered that her walk through Newmarket had netted her chosen charity - the Alzheimer’s Society - £3,612.57.

She said: “I thought we would be lucky to get about £500 but then everyone kept coming in and saying how much they had got - I was just overwhelmed.”

Jessica, who helps her father run a mobile home park, organised the run because her grandmother, Priscilla, has lived with Alzheimer’s for eight years, and her aunt’s mother also has the disease.

The 50-strong group of mainly family and friends, walked from St Agnes church in Bury Road, up Horse Walk and to the July Course and back, a distance of 10km.

Carrying collecting buckets, they went into shops as they passed by, and they also managed to get £700 from the Just Giving internet site.

Jessica added: “I’d like to thank my friends and family for all their support.”
