New bid to boost town’s fortunes
PLANS are in place to create a new retail forum in Mildenhall to help rejuvenate the town centre’s fortunes.
Following the launch of the successful Newmarket Retailers’ Association two years ago, proposals have been made to try to establish a similar organisation in Mildenhall.
The initiative has been given an early boost with both Mildenhall Parish Council and Forest Heath District Council pledging £500 each to help get it up and running.
“We are all for giving it a go. We just hope it takes off. I really want as many retailers as possible taking part,” said Joanne Rogers, Mildenhall town centre manager.
“We want it to have a real community feel about it. The whole point of it is to improve the vibrancy of the town centre.”
The launch of the organisation, which is to be called the Mildenhall Town Centre Retailers’ Association, is expected to take place next month.
After the initial launch, meetings will take place on a monthly basis.
“Meetings will allow retailers the chance to discuss and solve any problems they have regarding the town centre,” said Mrs Rogers.
“The plan is to run it on a monthly basis first then drop it down when things have sorted themselves out.
“Ideally we would like to set up some working groups within the association to look after different elements of it.”
The new association is not the first time such a project has been launched in Mildenhall. Several have been set up in the past before eventually folding.
But Mrs Rogers is hopeful that this time around the association will be here to stay for good.
“In the past these sort of schemes have fizzled out simply down to either a lack of action or people have just moved on,” said Mrs Rogers.
“With the state town centres are in these days we need these sort of projects.
“Hopefully traders will get on board and make it as successful as the scheme already running in Newmarket.”
