More than 90 caught without TV licence
MORE than 90 people in Newmarket were caught without a TV licence last year, figures have revealed.
This compares with more than 60 evaders in Stowmarket, 200 in Ely and more than 170 in Haverhill.
Pauline Gillingham, TV Licensing spokeswoman for the south east, said: “TV viewing is as popular as ever, with the percentage of households who have a television set at 96.7 per cent and it’s our role to make sure everyone is aware of when they need to be covered by a licence.
“On behalf of licence fee payers in Newmarket, we are committed to tackling evasion and enforcing the law amongst the small minority who should pay, but don’t. It’s only fair.”
TV Licensing catches about 1,000 licence evaders every day, despite 19 out of 20 households and businesses being correctly licensed.
