Disc Skimmers takes top prize
Newmarket Journal - December 2011 DISC SKIMMING BUSINESS IN SOHAM MARCUS BAILEY.
A SOHAM-based motor trade company has been selected to win free advertising and advice in a nationwide business initiative.
Disc Skimmers Ltd was one of three businesses shortlisted by the Journal as part of Local Business Accelerators, a competition which will hand out £15 million-worth of free advertising to 1,500 fledgling companies across the UK.
Marcus Bailey, owner of Disc Skimmers, said he was “chuffed to bits” to be selected from the shortlist, which also included eco-campsite Isleham Fen Ltd and fishmonger Fish (Burwell) Ltd.
He said: “It gives me the opportunity to introduce people to the service that I can provide. It is something that I wouldn’t have been able to afford to do, so I’m really pleased.”
Mr Bailey, 51, is now through to the national stage of the competition, where The Newspaper Society and Deborah Meaden, from TV programme Dragons’ Den, will review all regional winners and select an overall winner to receive a personal mentoring prize.
He said: “ I am equally as pleased to be going through to the national competition so I can put my business model to a wider audience and it will be very nice for a mentor to look through my business plan.”
Mr Bailey, of Clay Street, Soham, who is married with one daughter, Natalie, set up Disc Skimmers in June 2010 to specialise in resurfacing brake discs to avoid them being completely replaced.
He has 34 years of experience in motor engineering and also owns Midland Tyre Shaving and manages Headfen Lakes Fishery in Little Downham.
