A massive solar farm the size of more than 175 football pitches is to go ahead on farmland at Burwell.
Members of East Cambridgeshire District council’s planning committee agreed Lightsource SPV 115 Ltd’s proposal to site the solar panels and associated operating equipment on nearly 180 acres of land at Goosehall Farm in Factory Road.
Councillors were told that the panels had the capacity to generate around 39.48 megawatts of power enough for 11,000 homes with the energy generated fed directly into the local power grid network.
Committee chairman Cllr Joshua Schumann said: “The committee felt the applicant had carried out good and thorough public consultation and as a result they mitigated any possible risks and reduced public concern by amending and adapting their application.
“The committee was pleased to see a large renewable energy scheme which could power an estimated 11,000 homes with low negative impact on the local community and beyond. I am pleased to see a good example of a large renewable energy scheme that has worked alongside local residents and all tiers of local authority in order to deliver renewable energy in East Cambridgeshire.”
The owners of 36 neighbouring properties had been consulted and there were just two objections.
