Members of the Newmarket Allotments’ Association are trying to raise a further £1,500 to wards the cost of security fencing at their New Cheveley Road site.

Tony Mills, vice-chairman of the association, thanked members of Newmarket Town Council , which owns the site, for its contribution of £1,500 but said it would only cover half the cost of the fencing. The allotments had been subjected to a number of arson attacks last year and members are still counting the cost of clearing away debris which is around £1,000. “We need the fences because if these attacks keep happening we are going to lose members because they can’t afford to keep replacing valuable tools,” said Mr Mills.
