PUMPKINS big and small were ther stars of the show on Saturday as Soham held its annual pumpkin fair.
Keen gardeners and growers packed Soham recreation ground to enter their finest pumpkins and other produce into various categories of the competition, now in its 34th year.

But it was the pumpkin of 10-year-old William Richards which took centre stage, weighing a whopping 111.15kg making it the second largest in the country this year.

Entertainment was provided by pupils from The Weatheralls School who did maypole dancing, the Fenlander Majorettes, Zac the Clown and an African dance by youngsters at St Andrew's Primary School.

Visitors were also treated to a performance by BMX world champion Sam Folks, who stopped off in Soham before heading off to Japan.

All money raised will be donated to the Soham Scout Hut appeal.

Mark Williams, chairman, said: "It was a really beautiful afternoon. We had a good set of entries although this year has not seen good growing conditions for pumpkins as it was so wet and cold in August."

The prestigious National Pumpkin Championship was unable to run alongside this year's event because a sponsor could not be found.

Mr Williams is now looking for businesses or individuals prepared to come up with £1,000 for next year's championship.

Anyone who can help should contact him on 07836217386.
