SOME of racing's best known owners will be represented by runners on two legs instead of four in a charity run in London on Sunday, July 12.
Organised by Richard Negus, Racing Welfare's fundraising and communications executive, a team of 10 will be running around the streets of the capital for the racing-based charity in the British 10k London Run.
Running in the silks of owner Ray Anderson Green, the 38-year-old former household cavalry soldier, will be joined in the group by his wife Clare, running in Sir Robert Ogden's colours, and Channel Four presenter and Racing Welfare trustee Mike Cattermole, who will be wearing the silks of leading national hunt owner Andy Stewart.
"Training has been going really well. Clare and I have had help from Tansy Hiner, who works with me at Racing Welfare as she does a lot of running."
"When I was in the army I used to be quite fit but I haven't really done anything for the last five years so it will be a challenge. To make it a bit more entertaining I got in contact with several owners to see about running in their silks. The ones that have responded have been great. The winner of our race will be the one who raises the most money," he added.
So far, the team has raised more than £9,000 after receiving numerous donations from those inside racing circles and from friends and family members.
"We have had a lot of support from those in the racing industry. All the owners who have donated silks have put in more than we asked for.
"Fred Done the bookmaker has said he will donate £100 every kilometre Mike runs and if he completes it under 45 minutes will double it to £200 per kilometre," said Richard.
Starting out at Hyde Park Corner, the team will run past some of the city's most well-known landmarks, including the London Eye and Houses of Parliament, before crossing the finish line outside Horse Guards Parade in Whitehall.
