A MOTHER and daughter team from Newmarket will take on the challenge of a lifetime when they trek across the Sahara desert for charity early next year.
Patricia and Victoria Appleby are taking on the 100-km challenge across the African desert as part of the Classic FM team raising money for the radio station's Music Makers programme.
Ex-nurse Patricia said: "I have always held a fascination with deserts and I wanted to take up a challenge that would not be a pushover but a physical and mental challenge."
Victoria, 31, a work rider for trainer Jeremy Noseda, added: "It's something different to do and quite simply an adventure. I've never done anything like this before."
Although not tackling the desert for another six months, the pair have started training in order to prepare them for the gruelling task ahead.
"When you have four dogs, you do considerable amount of walking but, in addition, I have started walking the July Course starting at four miles and now upping it to six," added Patricia, 72.
"Let's just say my lurcher could give a greyhound a good run for his money now."
"I'm fairly fit, anyway, with regards to riding out every day," said Victoria.
By the end of the challenge, the pair hope to have raised between £15,000 and £20,000 for the charity, which helps fund music projects for under privileged children and vulnerable adults.
In order to reach the target the mother and daughter duo will be staging several fundraising events. First up will be a charity horse ride at Elevden Estates on Sunday, September 21.
