A JUDGE has ruled that a 43-year-old man accused of attempted murder at a funeral in Newmarket should remain in prison until his next court appearance.
Thomas Frankham appeared today at Ipswich Crown Court yesterday where he spoke only to confirm his name during a brief preliminary hearing before Judge Neil McKittrick.

Frankham, of Lydia Caravan Park, Stovolds Hill, Cranleigh, Surrey, was charged on June 17 in connection with an incident at Newmarket cemetery where the burial of a traveller was taking place on June 4.

The alleged victim, 38-year-old Michael Willett from Lincolnshire, was taken to hospital with head injuries.

He was treated at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, for two days before being released to recover at home.

The court heard from defence barrister Roger Thomson that a substantial number of defence witnesses were expected to be called when Frankham went on trial.

Judge McKittrick ordered that Frankham should reappear in court on September 5 when he is expected to be asked to enter a plea to the charge of attempted murder.

Until then, he will remain remanded in custody.
