A NEWMARKET dentist will be attempting a gruelling challenge in Germany in support of a schoolgirl who is struggling to find a suitable bone marrow transplant match.
Angela Girgis, who works at All Saints Road's M A Oates dental surgery, is taking on The Roth Quelle Challenge triathlon on July 12 to raise money and awareness of the Anthony Nolan Trust, a charity which finds potential bone marrow donors.

The 40 year old was inspired to tackle the event for the organisation following a widespread appeal by her patients Ann and Phil Hubbard for more people to register in a bid to find their daughter Emilia a donor.

Ten-year-old Emilia has aplastic anaemia, where the bone marrow fails to produce sufficient blood cells and platelets.

Despite doctors searching for a donor they have failed to find a suitable match and the family are waiting for new names on the register.

"I had seen what they were going through and wanted to do something to help," said Angela, of Ley Road, Stetchworth.

"I see the whole family so I knew Emilia before she was diagnosed and had been seeing her going through treatment and asked if there was anything I could do to offer support.

"It just seemed like a nice thing to do."

Some of the sponsorship will also be donated to Kettlefields School, where Angela has three children, which is fundraising for a climbing frame.

For the challenge, Angela will be flying to Roth, near Nuremberg, where she will attempt a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile cycle ride and a 26.2 mile marathon.

A member of Newmarket Cycling and Triathlon Club, she hopes to complete it in 14 hours.

"We are delighted that she is supporting our Emilia appeal and helping to highlight the need for more bone marrow donors to come forward," said Ann, who lives in Lower End, Swaffham Prior.

"The more names on the registers the greater the chance of finding a match for Emilia and others like her.

"We are sponsoring Angela in her challenge to raise much-needed funds for the Anthony Nolan Trust to enable its vital work to continue and we ask others to lend their support."
