FOREST HEATH Council has a new chairman but it is not the councillor who was tipped to take the chain of office.
Conservative councillor John McGhee, who had been vice-chairman for the past 12 months and was widely expected to take over, has stepped aside.

He is currently being investigated by the Standards Board, the councillors' disciplinary body, after he was criticised in a report by the local government watchdog.

At last week's annual meeting of the council, he nominated the council's planning committee chairman Rona Burt, who represents the Iceni ward, which includes Gazeley and Tuddenham, to take over the role from last year's chairman Cllr Bill Bishop.

The new vice-chairman is Cllr Malcolm Smith, from Mildenhall.
