GIANT sunflowers have been springing up in gardens across Barton Mills as part of a village competition.
More than 500 packs of seeds donated by Fothergill's Seeds in Kentford were sent out to homes in the village by the Barton Mills and District Gardening Club.

Packets of seeds were also given to St Mary's Primary School, Mildenhall, for a junior class.

Around 20 people decided to take part in the competition to grow the tallest sunflower with only those over six foot qualifying for judging.

Joint winners were David Bliss, of The Street, and Albert Paul, of Wiggin Close, whose sunflowers grew to a whopping 10ft 9in tall.

Event organiser Shirley Beardsmore said: "It has been quite nice going around the village and seeing all these sunflowers growing.

"It is something that is a lot of fun to do."
